East Carolina University (ECU) is an R1 Carnegie-classified institution of higher education for community engagement. Since 1939, ECU’s Master of Library Science (MLS) Program has educated library professionals and, in this 21st century, provides an asynchronous, online degree program.
The ECU MLS Program’s mission is to prepare library and information science professionals with the knowledge, skills, and values to succeed in a global society. The MLS Program’s goals and objectives focus on teaching excellence, student success, impactful research, and community engagement, aligning with the priorities outlined in East Carolina University’s 2023-2028 Strategic Plan.

The Master of Library Science program offers four professional concentrations: Academic Librarianship, Archive and Cultural Heritage Informatics, Public Librarianship, and School Librarianship. The MLS Program’s faculty includes nationally and internationally renowned scholars in archives, cultural heritage informatics, and academic and public librarianship. The Program publishes the peer-reviewed, open access journal, The International Journal of Information, Diversity, & Inclusion (IJIDI), which attracts LIS scholarly research worldwide.
North Carolina is a 100-county state geographically composed of three regions: The Coastal Plain (Eastern North Carolina), the Piedmont (Central North Carolina), and the Mountain region (Western North Carolina). Eastern North Carolina (ENC) comprises 41 counties, of which 38 are classified as rural. The city of Greenville (where East Carolina University is located) is the region’s central urban area. The ECU MLS Program is the only ALA-accredited library science program in the ENC region.
