Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) at the University of Chicago

The Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) at the University of Chicago is a collaborative organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting the study of Black history and culture. It is a Chicago-based membership association of libraries, universities, museums, community/arts organizations, and other archival institutions.

The BMRC’s mission is to connect all who seek to document, share, understand and preserve Black experiences. It is the vision of BMRC to be essential to promoting discovery, preservation, and use of Black historical collections.

Through archival research, fellowship programs, and digital initiatives, the BMRC supports scholars, students, and community members in accessing and interpreting Black historical collections. The consortium works with libraries, museums, and archives to ensure the preservation of materials related to the African American experience.

BMRC-affiliated researchers focus on archival justice, digital humanities, African American history, and community-based knowledge projects. The consortium remains a leading institution for advancing research and public engagement with Black heritage materials.
